It was June 1984. Dean was six, Izzie was five.
They both sat plopped in front of the TV eating gummy bears that they bought from the gas station convenience store up the road. Izzie's mom only had two channels in her trailer and there was rarely anything good on them, so Dean flipped a coin and they left it on channel 5. St. Elsewhere was on, which Izzie was happy about because she loved that show, even though she didn't understand most of it. Dean would have much rather watch Magnum, P.I.
"Hey, I wanted that one!" Izzie frowned, watching the last clear gummy bear disappear into Dean's black hole of a mouth. He chewed and looked at her with his best puppy-dog eyes, and she huffed in exasperation.
They turned their attention back to the show where a man and a woman were sitting in a cafeteria eating lunch. Dean figured they were probably good friends because they were sharing each other's food. The man said something that the woman didn't like, as evidenced by the cross look on the woman's face as she pushed the man's plate of food back towards him and focused on eating her own. The man apologized, leaned in towards her and held her face as he kissed her sincerely. The woman begrudgingly smiled and once again stole something off the man's plate.
A light bulb flicked on in Dean's head.
He turned to Izzie, grabbed her face and planted a wet one on her lips.
Dean and Izzie blinked at each other, their faces expressionless.
"You can have a green one," Izzie said after a long pause, shoving the bag of gummy bears towards Dean as she wiped her mouth on her sleeve.
They both turned back towards the TV and watched the rest of the show.
