Aaron Littleton shook his bangs out of his eyes as he continued to rifle through the $2 CD bin at Hard Copy, his favourite music store. When he wasn't in his buddy Ed's garage rehearsing with his band mates, he was here combing over the store's entire stock from A to Z, always afraid he'd missed some hidden gem. While most music stores these days just sold those digital cards whose code you redeem online to download your album, Hard Copy was one of the few remaining music stores that still sold CDs (and even the odd vinyl), which is where it got its name.

Aaron was sixteen, but he was an old soul. He loved this store because he loved having music come in some tangible form that he could hold in his hand. It was a tradition upheld by many generations of teenagers before him, and he took great pride in carrying it on. There was something fascinating in examining the intricacies of an album's cover art, no matter how simple or complicated it was. How could anyone expect to get the full experience of, say, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band, if all they have is a tiny 2x3" picture of its cover on a little card? Madness.

Aaron was just about to give up on the $2 CD bin; he either already owned most of them or he didn't care to. He got to the last one: its cover had a background that faded from black on top to red on bottom with the title Driveshaft: Greatest Hits in white across the center.

Aaron had never heard of them.

He flipped to the back to read the track listing when something in the band's group shot caught his eye. A scraggly-looking guy in a hoodie with dark blondish hair sat on the far right of the picture, his left hand resting on one knee very close to the camera. On his middle finger lay a silver ring with the initials "D.S." resting on a sort of star shape. Aaron raised his eyebrows and looked down at his own left hand where he wore the same ring, also on his middle finger. He looked back at the picture again to more closely examine the ring and compare it with his own. As far as he could tell, they were identical.

"Hey, Phil!" Aaron called out to the employee behind the counter as he walked over with the CD in his hand.

"Littleton of Bethlehem, what can I do you for?" replied Phil. Everyone who worked here knew Aaron's name (and called him by his nickname).

"You ever hear of these guys 'Driveshaft'? They any good?"

"Uh..." Phil paused to think about it. "I have no idea, dude. I think their bassist was in a plane crash or something and the rest of the band came back with some kind of tribute to him, but they disappeared into oblivion after that."

"Oh," said Aaron, nodding. Absent-mindedly, he continued to nod as he studied the picture, his gaze repeatedly going from the guy's unfamiliar face, back to the ring. When his own was given to him, Aaron was told that it was a family heirloom. He had asked what "D.S." stood for, but was never given a straight answer.

"Littleton? You okay, man?" asked Phil. Aaron had been engrossed in his thoughts and hadn't said anything for nearly a minute.

"Oh yeah, I'm good, it's just... this guy's got my ring!" Aaron laughed in disbelief as he showed Phil the back of the CD along with the fingers on his left hand fanned out in front of him.

Phil examined both rings. "Hah, that's hilarious, man! Is yours a replica or something?"

"No, man, it's a family heirloom!" said Aaron. "Or at least I thought it was..."

"Maybe you're related to this guy..." said Phil. He squinted as he looked closer at the picture. "Hey, I think he might be the bassist, dude."

"Yeah?" said Aaron. He wondered if the guy had it on when he crashed. "How the hell did I get it, then?"

Phil started humming the Twilight Zone theme song. Aaron scoffed. He had always liked that ring. He thought the look of it was really cool, and as a result, he never took it off. He liked its uniqueness. Now suddenly it wasn't so unique anymore. Some random guy in some random band had one just like it. It couldn't possibly have been the same one; that guy probably died with it on when his plane crashed.

Aaron took another hard look at the photo and sighed as he passed the CD over the counter for Phil to ring in while he dug around his pocket for spare change.

"Let me know if they're any good," Phil said as he handed the CD over to Aaron along with his receipt. "I get the impression that they might suck balls, though."

"Hey, don't insult my favourite band," Aaron smirked as he held up his ring finger.

Aaron left the store with a several questions still swirling around in his head. The whole thing was weird. But he kept getting back to one thing: No one had really ever told him what "D.S." stood for.

Loved this - is there going to be a sequel where Aaron finds out any more about Charlie? Because that might be interesting to read. Great image at the end!

[identity profile] hopelessfangirl.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't planned on a sequel, but it could happen eventually I suppose if I get the right inspiration! I'm very glad you like this. Thank you for reading!

[identity profile] mollivanders.livejournal.com 2009-07-13 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
really liked this... I'm guessing the title might relate a part 2 where Aaron recognizes the music even though he's never heard it before? technically?

[identity profile] hopelessfangirl.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly hadn't planned on continuing with the story, but since there seems to be interest, I'm definitely going to think about it. =) It all depends on the right inspiration.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks

That was awesome! And really original - I'd love to read more.

[identity profile] hopelessfangirl.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it. A sequel is a possibility... I'll have to see what I come up with. =)

Very cool. How depressing to think one day soon there will be CD shops like there are record shops now.

This really made me wonder about Claire -- whether she was involved with Aaron's upbringing or who his "family" of the heirloom would be.

"How depressing to think one day soon there will be CD shops like there are record shops now. "

I know, right? It's already starting to go that way, much to my dismay... =(

Thanks for reading! I was intentionally vague about Claire because I actually didn't know where I thought she would be. But keeping with the canon of the show thus far, you can assume that the ring made its way to Aaron via Sun. If I do a second part to this, I might explore that.

This was so great! I love how you made Aaron in love with music too :)

It makes me so happy when you write, sweets! This was wonderful! And the photo at the end was a lovely added touch! <3

[identity profile] hopelessfangirl.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe. Obviously my way of rectifying the fact that Charlie couldn't be Aaron's dad is by making him as similar to him as possible depite that fact. ;)

Aw, thank you so much hun! I'm certainly not as comfortable writing as I am with graphics, but I'm glad I'm not absolute rubbish at it. ♥ Thank you my dearest!

Seriously, doesn't that kid look like Emilie de Ravin? Kinda freaked me out when I found it. Thus, it had to be used.

I love it ^_^

Thank you muchly! =D

Ha, this was awesome! I really loved the premise and how you developed it, and awww, my heart warmed at Aaron being a music geek too and having a band and everything. ♥ Also, OT but I was seriously nodding at everything you wrote in the first three paragraphs, being the odd person who raids record shops on regular basis and hates downloaded stuff which you can get on cd.

How could anyone expect to get the full experience of, say, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band, if all they have is a tiny 2x3" picture of its cover on a little card? Madness.

THIS, I CONCUR. Okay, seriously, apart from that, this was great. And it felt very Lost-like that Aaron should realize where the ring comes from like this. Lovely work! ♥

[identity profile] hopelessfangirl.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to make Aaron a music geek. That's like, the only thing I definitely want for his future. ;) And likewise, I still prefer buying music in a store as opposed to buying an album on iTunes or wherever. I'm just sad I missed out on the prime vinyl era, cause I think there's even less magic in looking at CD cover art, which is so small...

I'm so glad you liked this, my dear! Thank you for the lovely comments! ♥

Oh, my heart! This was just so lovely. I love how similar he is to Charlie without ever really knowing him. Oh, and then he recognized the ring! I kind of adore this whole fic. Great job!

[identity profile] hopelessfangirl.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! I'm very hung up about this ring getting to Aaron and have been ever since Charlie died. I'm very happy Sun found it in the finale and that it's got a chance of getting back to him now. I'm very adamant about that. ;)

Thanks again for reading/commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Oh, this was good! Really liked it, and the graphic too!

Thanks very much! I'm glad!

♥ Aw, that is so lovely. ♥ I love the picture you found for the end of it as well; seems perfect for teenage!Aaron. I'm now in love with the idea of Aaron unknowingly walking in Charlie's footsteps with his music as well - hopefully it will turn out better for him than it did for Charlie!

[identity profile] hopelessfangirl.livejournal.com 2009-07-17 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it?? I think the guy looks just like Emilie de Ravin. I was very happy to come across that picture and be able to include it with this. =D

I'm so very glad the queen is pleased! ♥ Any excuse to make that connection between Aaron and his true daddy. I sincerely hope that if we ever do get a glance into Aaron's future that he is strikingly similar to Charlie.
