Author's Notes: For the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] ozmissage, who requested Lost Ladies (with an emphasis on Juliet) at [livejournal.com profile] lostsquee's 2010 Luau. Since Juliet and Penny are my own favourite Lost ladies, I had see them interact somehow. I hope you like it!

Though it was true that Penny had enough money to her name to buy herself a new wardrobe every day if she wanted, she loved shopping at garage sales. There was something about used items that fascinated her; knowing that an object had a history before she found it made it far more unique than any new and shiny thing that she could buy at a shop. Penny was happy to find things with nicks and cracks in them because it meant they had once been well-loved. Things that were in more pristine condition made her wonder if they were secretly faulty or had just been neglected over time. Whatever the story, Penny loved to imagine the events that let an object to end up in her hand.

At the moment, Penny was in Miami, Florida on holiday, perusing a box full of books marked “50¢” at the yard sale of a young woman roughly her own age. The woman sat at a table off to the side counting change for the man who had just bought her table lamp. She swept a lock of wavy blonde hair behind her ear and thanked the man as she handed him back his change. She spotted Penny looking her way and they exchanged smiles.

Penny focused her attention back to the books. There were a wide variety of genres and authors ranging from Jane Austen to Kurt Vonnegut to Stephen King. Penny picked up an extremely worn copy of Charles Dickens’s Our Mutual Friend. She was reading the synopsis on the back cover when the blonde woman came over to her.

“I love that book,” she said. “Broke my heart to put it in the ‘Sell’ pile.”

“What made you do it?” Penny asked, cocking her head to the side.

“Curse of the poor student,” she replied with a sheepish smile. “I just got into med school, I’m starting in the fall.” Penny let out an impressed “Oh!” and the woman nodded and grinned. “Yeah, I’m excited! Anyway, I figure I won’t have much time for recreational reading anymore, so I might as well try to get rid of as much unnecessary stuff as possible.”

“Well congratulations, really, good for you,” said Penny. “Medicine. Wow. I don’t know if I’d have the stomach for that myself!”

The woman laughed. “Honestly, I don’t know if I will either, but time will tell, I guess! I’m Juliet, by the way.” Juliet extended her hand.

“Penelope.”

“Oh, what a pretty name,” Juliet commented as they shook hands.

“I was about to say the same about yours, actually!” The two of them laughed.

Penny noticed Juliet discreetly eyeing the book in her hand. She could tell Juliet didn’t want to part with it. “Well,” said Penny, holding up Our Mutual Friend. “I will take this one on your recommendation, doctor. Would you mind if I took the whole box as well?”

“If you want them, by all means!” Juliet smiled overenthusiastically.

Together they counted the books in the box. “23,” said Juliet. “$10 is fine.”

Penny handed her a hundred dollar bill.

“Oh, I don’t know if I have change for that...” Juliet walked over to the money safe on her table and started to rummage through it.

“Don’t worry about it,” Penny waved her hand. “Keep it.”

“Oh my gosh, I couldn’t—”

“I insist,” said Penny. She shook the box in her arms. “Thanks so much for all these.” She turned and headed towards her car. After placing the box in the trunk, she disappeared around the side and into the driver’s seat. As she started the ignition, she heard Juliet call out to her.

“Oh! Uh, Penelope! You forgot this!” Juliet was waving Our Mutual Friend over her head.

“No, I didn’t,” Penny called back with a smile. “I’m sure I’ll read it eventually. That belongs to you.”

Juliet was speechless. She tucked the book under her arm and yelled out her thanks as the car started to roll out of the driveway. Penny waved back as she headed out onto the road and out of sight.

I'm just going to go ahead and declare my undying love to you now.

OMG, I LOVE THIS.

Everything about this is perfect. Penny's love of garage sales, a young Juliet on her way to Med School, the way the conversation pivots around Our Mutual Friend---it all just fillled me with squee even as it gave me goosebumps. I adore both of these women so much and the idea that they met and shared this beautiful moment together makes me so incredibly happy.

And this:

*happy sigh*

Penny let her keep the book. GUH. Thank you so, so much for this! :D

Omg, I meant to reply to this earlier and the comment notification got lost in my inbox! D= Anyway:

I am ELATED that you love this! ♥ It's really a shame that Juliet and Penny never really got to share a scene on the show, but I suppose we would have all died from so much Awesome Lady-ness at once. ;)

Originally I was thinking Our Mutual Friend was going to end up the same copy Desmond had, but I figured it would be more Penny-like to do something nice for someone and leave the Des connection up to coincidence. =)

Oh, I'm so, so glad you like this, hun! Thank you!
