ETA: This post sums up everything I didn't have the coherence to say earlier on Sam + Bucky + race in this episode. I am so glad that this is being written from a Black writer's perspective because there are nuances there that I KNOW white people missed and I trust will likely be addressed more head-on later. I hate that Sam has to have this struggle with the mantle and even though Bucky is in his own pain too, I felt very protective of Sam in that therapy scene because what Sam is going through hurts on a lifelong, cellular level. Just because Sam didn't say much in that moment didn't mean he was flippant, aloof, or less affected on the matter, he stood his ground enough to say he has his own reasons without having to rehash a lifetime of issues that come with being a MOC, especially a Black man. I'm so ready for them to do a deeper dive into him, Isaiah, and Eli and their identities over the course of the show but I'm really glad Sam left it at that at that moment in time. I only wish it wasn't at the cost of attention to his pain because I'm seeing way more people feeling for Bucky there than Sam, which is disappointing but not surprising but kinda telling that the important part of the end of that scene is getting overlooked: "What was rule number two again?" "Don't hurt anybody." followed by Bucky on the street telling Sam he felt awful.
